On April 26th, 2009, Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times foreign correspondent Nicholas Kristof tweeted that there was “No Twitter page – yet” for Laura Ling and Euna Lee, the Current TV reporters detained a month earlier (March 17th) by an opportunistic North Korean regime.
Los Angeles entertainment journalist-editor Richard Horgan (@FilmStew) read this tweet and, motivated by both a personal interest in the case and a Twitter connection to Ling, decided to take up Kristof on the Twitter challenge. Thus, @LiberateLaura was born. This separate Twitter feed, @LiberateNK, has been set up by Horgan to focus on the humanitarian crisis encompassing North Korean refugees, labor camp prisoners and countless starving citizens.
Horgan is also a volunteer, part-time English language articles editor for the clandestine North Korean website The Daily NK, helping polish pieces such as “The Broader Brush Strokes of South Korea.”
